The University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a research and development center with an international reputation for developing instrumentation for both terrestrial and space flight applications. SSEC's mission includes the support of faculty and academic staff led research, development, fabrication and implementation of space flight experiments, as well as the development of new meteorological research tools for national and international use.
The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists and software engineers supporting the NASA Atmosphere Science Investigator lead Processing System (ASIPS) which is located at SSEC. The ASIPS is responsible for supporting the satellite algorithm development and data processing for the next generation weather and climate satellites (VIIRS and MODIS) with the products used by a diverse and international community in support of climate research. The candidate will work directly with NASA researchers and algorithm developers with a focus on integration and testing of algorithms into the ASIPS processing system consisting of both a large storage and processing cluster (10 Petabytes and 2500 CPU cores). The candidate will also work on developing tools for product evaluation including both statistical analysis of global satellite products and imagery with close collaboration with our NASA science teams and collaborators.
Education: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Physics, Atmospheric Science, or related science with a background in data analysis and software development. Masters or PhD preferred.
Qualifications: Knowledge and experience working with large data sets and applications with a strong technical background in numerical computing is necessary. Proficiency in scientific programing languages is required with experience with Python or comparable language within a Linux environment. The candidate should be familiar with shell scripting and working with cluster and/or cloud computing environments. Previous experience processing environmental satellite data is desirable but not required.
